Just this week, on February 21st 2014, 265 copies of the diary of Anne Frank were vandalized in 36 libraries across Tokyo. While the motive is yet unclear, the Simon Wiesenthal Center, a U.S.-based Jewish human rights organization, has issued a statement calling the vandalism a hate campaign.
In recent years we have learned to always be alert when reading or listening to the news. We have learned that many things that are being presented to us as solid facts are often nothing but a certain take on reality. As we approach the end of 2013 we already know that news can be extremely biased and that we must pay attention to what we're being told.
After the recent catastrophe that hit the Philippines, Jews all around the world, alongside the Israeli government and various NGOs, mobilized to help on the Typhoon Haiyan disaster front. This broad mobilization reminds us of one of the last large-scale Israeli humanitarian campaigns, in Haiti 2010. Beyond the tragic human consequences of this catastrophe, this episode and the intervention of Israeli elements on the ground, fed particularly malodorous Antisemitic rumors that could re-appear this time as well.
